That’s how world renowned Filipino artist David Medalla greeted everyone who got goosebumps to have a close encounter with him and his work Cloud Canyons No. 31, a rare sight and considered a very historically important work of art during the an intimate gathering held at the BDO Corporate Center in Ortigas (COO) yesterday.

BDO, recognized as one of the top banks that supports Philippine Art, paid tribute to Medalla, whose different work has been recognized here and abroad.

Born in Manila in 1942, Medalla range of his work varies from sculpture and kinetic art to painting, installation and performance art. Medalla lives and works in London, New York and Paris for the past years before settling here in the Philippines. His famous work also known as “Canyon of Clouds” known as one of the top 5 art collections of BDO.

The art often referred to as “bubble machines” was produced in 1961 and has been exhibited in many parts of world for more than half a century and is now permanently installed, open for public viewing, at the BDO Corporate Center in Ortigas.

This one of a kind scuplture, changes shape and even shades and color, is made up of plexiglass tubes, wood, fiberglass, water, soap, and oxygenerators.

Now, the other interesting part is the inspirations of Medalla for Cloud Canyons. It was derived from his memories of a dying Japanese soldier’s frothing mouth, clouds of Manila, his mother’s bubbling ginataan, a brewery in Scotland and the Skyline of New York.
