The National Federation of Tobacco Growers and Cooperatives (NFTGC) welcomes with open arms the announcement of Mighty Corporation or Mighty Corp to purchase at least 10 million kilograms of tobacco leaves and to buy all the excess tobacco leaves that farmers could not sell to other buyers.
NFTGC President Mario Cabasal was ecstatic after learning that Mighty Corp has made an assurance to push its partnership with farmer groups in Luzon that includes a twin P10-million that will be very beneficial to tobacco farmers and their families.
Mighty Corporation Executive Vice President Oscar P. Barrientos said, “Our company has earlier sought the help of the National Tobacco Administration how to go about their planned purchase of P10-million kilograms tobacco leaves and the multi-pronged P10-million corporate social responsibility (CSR) for tobacco farmers and their families.
Cabasal, representing 200 farmer leaders, said that they are grateful and are looking forward to the commitments of Mighty Corp to help the 65,000 strong tobacco farmers in the Philippines along with the P10-million outreach projects for tobacco farmers and their dependents.
In the agreement signed by Mighty Corp and NFTGC in a hotel in La Union recently, the partnership includes the donation of support farm implements like irrigation pumps and tractors, new 200 college scholar grants for the sons of daughters of tobacco farmers and the institutional support for the annual search for outstanding tobacco farmers and cooperatives.
NFTGC pointed out that thousands of farmers in Pangasinan and the Ilocos provinces have expressed relief that their tobacco leaves will have a sure market this year since they are now assured of an alternative market, and will again be inspired to devote larger areas to the cultivation of tobacco, considered as the region’s most important cash crop.
