Bulacan-based cigarette manufacturer Mighty Corporation or Mighty Corp has signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the 200 farmer leaders of the National Federation of Tobacco Farmers and Cooperatives Inc. (NAFTAC) from Pangasinan, La Union, Abra, Cagayan, Isabela, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur at a hotel in La Union recently.
Under the said agreement, Mighty Corp, the only fully Filipino-owned tobacco company in the country, will provide 16 hand tractors worth P2.5 million and 90 irrigation pumps worth P1.1 million to NAFTAC which will then manage equal distribution among its members.
One of the witnesses of the MOA signing was Bishop Rodolfo Beltran of San Fernando City, La Union who commended the Wong Chu King Foundation (WCKF), the corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm of Mighty Corp, for spearheading such projects along with its commitment in apostolic works and education in its programs.
According to Beltran, the foundation has been helping the church to spread the faith in the Philippines and so far donated to church projects funding the education of poor but deserving students in Lagawe, Bontoc who took vocational courses like sewing, weaving and hairstyling. The company has also sponsored four seminarians under their project.
Beltran pointed out that education will be the key to a better future for the children of farmers and said, “The parents of these students are low-income farmers producing only for local consumption. So you can imagine the positive impact this kind of support has for them.”
The bishop added that the Catholic Church is very happy about all the projects initiated by Mighty Corp because they provide a big lift for the farmers, not only in La Union but also the whole of Northern Luzon with more than 65,000 organized tobacco farmers benefiting from it.
