Mighty Corp Continues to Assist Yolanda Survivors

The effects of the devastation that typhoon Yolanda has brought to some provinces is still a major problem to solve four months after the dreadful catastrophe hit them.  This is what Mighty Corporation, the only wholly Filipino-owned cigarette manufacturer in the country, believes as it continues to assist survivors in at least four provinces.

Based on the latest report released by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), at least 5,209 killed, 23,404 injured and 1,611 are still missing after the onslaught of Yolanda.  However, the government has yet to finalize the figures on the disaster as updates continue to come.  Initial estimate of the casualties is placed around 10,000 people.

Mighty Corp., through its corporate social responsibility (CSR) arm Wong Chu King Foundation (WCKF) has donated more than P4 million to hundreds of victims of super typhoon Yolanda in the provinces of Leyte, Cebu, Iloilo and Capiz.  The said foundation is a philanthropic non-government organization providing assistance to the poor and underprivileged sectors.

WCKF was founded in 1990 with the aim of perpetuating the memory of Wong Chu King, the family patriarch, a philanthropist who had provided assistance to the poor and underprivileged in his lifetime.  Another vision of the foundation is to encourage and promote education through scholarship programs and raise funds for charitable, cultural and educational purposes.

The foundation’s board of directors led by its chairman, Nelia Wong Chu King, approved the release of the funds to the victims, including 78 employees of Mighty Corporation and their dependents whose homes were either totally or partially destroyed by the typhoon. The good news was confirmed by WCKF coordinator Camille Arsenal.

Arsenal explains that the Bulacan-based cigarette company has always been helping communities in need and said, “WCKF did not think twice after learning of the extent of the disaster. The victims were given enough funds to enable them to pick up the pieces and recover from the disaster.  Mrs. Wong Chu King wants to treat our employees like family.”
